Equine Liability Laws in Massachusetts
Whether you keep your horse at home or at a boarding stable, ride for pleasure or competitively, it is advisable
that you learn all you can about equine-related legal issues. Currently 46 states have some form of an
equine-activity liability act. The greatest misconception is that equine liability laws aren't zero-liability or
total immunity laws.

Private Horse Owner's Liability Insurance
A responsible trail horse owner should consider getting Private Horse Owner's Liability (PHO) insurance in
case the horse gets loose and runs into the road causing a car accident, destroys property, or hurts a by-stander.
Even if your horse kicks someone while riding the trails, such as another rider's leg as the horse strikes out at
another horse, you are covered (because the injured is a third person).
Private Horse Owner's Liability Insurance covers you if your horse directly
injures someone else, or causes property damage to bystanders, or fellow trail riders. We all know
of horses that got out of the pasture, ran away on the trail, or got away from the trailer while loading. Basic PHO
is well worth the time and money; actually, it is very cheap, starting at as little as $150 a year.
